20th November 2024 - HORIBA MIRA HOSTS LAUNCH OF EURO NCAP HGV TESTS
TRUCK SAFE is an innovative rating initiative designed to enhance safety standards within the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) sector. For the first time in history, HGVs have undergone rigorous safety testing, marking a significant milestone in the industry. On 20 November, HORIBA MIRA hosted an exclusive event where Euro NCAP introduced the new testing protocols and shared the initial results with approximately 130 invited guests and members of the media.
The first set of tests under the TRUCK SAFE guidelines focused on nine vehicles from the long-haul fleet category. These trucks account for an impressive 95% of vehicles within their segment currently operating on European roads.
The results showcased a wide range of performance levels among the tested vehicles. Two trucks received the prestigious five-star rating, while two earned four stars. Four trucks achieved three stars, and one vehicle lagged behind with a single-star rating. Additionally, four trucks were recognised with the CitySafe accreditation for urban safety performance.
Volvo emerged as a standout performer in this assessment, with its FH Aero and FM models both achieving the coveted five-star rating. At the opposite end of the spectrum, IVECO’s current S-WAY model was deemed the weakest performer, receiving just one star.
For nearly three decades, Euro NCAP has been at the forefront of driving improvements in road safety by evaluating and rating the active and passive safety features of passenger vehicles. In 2020, the organisation expanded its efforts to include Light Commercial Vehicles, and the introduction of the TRUCK SAFE initiative marks another significant step towards improving road safety across all vehicle categories.
